VIVIANA KNEW SHE hadn't played fair. She might feel a lot guiltier about that had it not been for the body that had burned along with her car. Hank Bateman might not have lit the fire himself, but he was behind it. It was the kind of act she'd expect from a man sick enough to kill a helpless infant.
Dakota was strong, tough and willing to protect her and Briana, but he was only one man. She liked the odds a whole lot better with four Ledgers to fight off the bad guys.
If there was more to her reasoning, she wasn't admitting it yet. But she had liked Troy from almost the minute she'd met him. So had Briana, and babies were seldom fooled. Dakota might not need a father, but Briana could use a doting grandfather and she'd never get that from Viviana's dad.
"Do we have much farther to go?" she asked.
"About five miles." Dakota kept both hands on the steering wheel and didn't glance her way.
"Are you going to pout and not speak to me the whole time we're on the ranch?"
"Don't tell me you're going to start worrying about my feelings now."
"Staying at the ranch makes sense and you know it, Dakota. We'll each have our own bedroom, even Briana. We'll be on an isolated ranch with no one around to see and identify us in case Hank Bateman or one of his henchmen happens to come snooping around."
"And I'll get to roam the house where my mother was murdered. We'll just have a jolly old time."
Viviana had been so focused on doing what was best for Briana, she hadn't even considered that. Guilt set in, causing her to rethink her impulsive decision. "I'm sorry, Dakota. If you don't want to stay at the ranch, turn around and we'll go back to Abby's. That was our original agreement. I had no right to change it against your will."
He nudged his Stetson back an inch or two. "No. You were right. The ranch makes more sense and I was probably going to have to face my dad one day just to get my brothers off my back. It may as well be now."
"You might consider giving him a chance. Innocent men have been convicted before. Your father could be telling the truth."
"He's definitely convinced Dylan, Tyler and Sean that he is."
"And they know him a lot better than you do," she reminded him.
"Okay, I concede that he might be innocent. Are you happy now?"
"If you think he might be innocent, then I don't see why you're so dead set against at least trying to reconnect with him."
"He doesn't need me. And I don't need him. That's just how it is."
"But not how it has to be."
Dakota turned into a dirt drive and stopped at a metal gate. The sign hanging above it read Welcome to Willow Creek Ranch. A large black crow set atop the sign. It cawed loudly, almost as if it were warning her to stay out.
